Occultists and Fascists

We were approached recently to contribute to Troy Southgate's Black Front Press whose last published work was a Crowley anthology.

After a little research, we were disturbed to find their rather murky history hidden beneath the anti-corporate, anti-capitalist and permaculture ideals.

Though we are very happy to promote the independent esoteric and occult authors and publishers whose work and dedication invigorate and stimulate our community, it is entirely another matter to contribute our energy to a project which would seem to be attempting to use a multiplicity of voices from the occult scene to promote the ideas of the so-called New-Right.

First port of call is Wikipedia:

Of course, the accuracy of Wikipedia is always up for debate, but then there are plentiful online interviews:

Or perhaps this article on Co-opting the Counter Culture: Troy Southgate and the National Revolutionary Faction:

We find it impossible to ignore statements like this on the main site:

"Race defines who we are, it provides us with an identity and exists for a damn good reason. Without maintaining this essential diversity, something you can find throughout nature, the world will become increasingly drab, standardised and monotonous and the only people left on the planet will inevitably form part of a coffee-coloured mush of uniform humanity. National-Anarchists wish to preserve the different races of the earth and believe that multi-racialism ends with the dissolution of all races. Racial separatism is the only way that the organic balance can be restored."

Our emphasis is in bold, and our disgust is profound.

What is clear in magickal history is that racial mixing has been incredibly beneficial. Let us consider the influences of Persian, Arabic, Chinese, Indian, Tibetan, Jewish and Greek magick that characterise the Western Tradition. Not to mention Africa, which has enriched Europe and the New World. This is proved by the material on Palo Mayombe, Quimbanda, Voudou et al. We could go on. Knowledge comes from exchange and inter-pentetration of peoples, cultures and ideas. And the mingling of knowledge and blood is as old as man and woman. The idea of purity of race and culture is a relatively recent innovation in the quest for meaning amongst the ruins.

We have sought to print writers, some of whom we disagree with, as we hold that there is much to gain from a plurality of voices, perspectives and experiences. However, this does not mean that we ever support giving fascists a platform, or having our own voices co-opted to that end.

To be clear we are not implying that those who write for this Press hold fascist views. Nonetheless, those who choose to write for these publications must be clear that they are providing an intellectual fig leaf for an ideology which would otherwise struggle to be taken seriously.

There is a Spanish proverb, 'Tell me who you walk with and I will tell you who you are'.

All blood is mixed in the cup.

This portion of your post speaks volumes; Nowhere is the great benefit of intermingling and marriage of the races, creeds, cultures and codes more pronounced than in Magick and also the Esoteric in general.

While it is perfectly respectable, and even expected, for one to take great pride in their own heritage and the contributions it has made throughout history, it is fallacy to deny those of any other.

Beautiful post, filled with wisdom.

I've only read parts of the links provided, but this particular guy doesn't sound like a Fascist, though he does sound like a White Separatist. That is a pretty huge distinction actually.

I am a magician/witch within the western esoteric tradition. I know, firsthand, the magickal benefits of this cultural/racial transmission and I advocate it wholeheartedly.

Aside from my magickal bias, I am also a scholar of ancient history. To assert that cultures and/or peoples have existed as discrete units is completely asinine and ahistorical. Southgate, et al., are merely trying to play upon the reactionary fears of the disenfranchised who have no concept of history beyond sophomoric reductions. Of course, in their worldview, all societal ills will be solved once we stop abortion, homosexuality, feminism and race-mixing. Sounds suspiciously similar to other "mainstream" political movements that infect our political landscape(s). :-)

An outfit closely associated with Southgate is PRIMORDIAL TRADITIONS whose publisher is Gwendolyn Toynton. She was to be my publisher for two book length translations from Persian and Arabic of seminal Babi works I was to have undertaken with her outfit. I was also to have published an article in a forthcoming volume entitled ALCHEMICAL TRADITIONS (ed.) Aaron Cheek. Under the guise of Traditionalism (re: the ideas of Guenon, Evola, et al) this outfit is promoting the spiritual ideological wing of this Neo-Fascism. To make a long story short, Toynton and I had personal and public falling out - as it was revealed to me that this individual is closely associated with Haifan Bahaism, which is to the Islamic world what Scientology is to the West - and so I pulled the article I was to have published with ALCHEMICAL TRADITIONS out of the volume. My article can now be found here:

The blog I published of my final correspondence with Toynton can be found here:

Just a quick response for Russell,
have a look at the BNP who Southgate has written for, and also the National Front which he belonged to.
What is rather insidious about his latest caper is that it is not a braggingly open fascism, but in fact claims to be apolitical and promoting diversity. The agenda behind it is clearly not.
Thanks as well to all the others who have commented thus far.

Crypto-Fascist pseudo-Anarchist? Somehow I'm a little less threatened by Southgate than by the average Fundamentalist Mormon here where I live. Mattias Gardell's book Gods of the Blood would be of similar interest as something of an expose that is largely on target.

An excellent posting by two brave, adventurous and reliable voices of sanity in the international occult arena - thank you so much, Peter and Alkistis!

I'm glad to see Scarlet Imprint taking such a stand. Troy Southgate is a particularly loathsome individual on the fringes of the radical right wing.

Southgate attempts to co-opt anything he feels will forward his racist, homophobic, anti-choice, and misogynistic ideology. Whether this is Roman Catholicism, Asatru (with a weird dose of Mayan eschatology), or his entryism into noise and neofolk musical subcultures.

Even the most cursory glance over his writings show a whole host of logical fallacy, delusions of grandeur, and a very twisted and hateful view of the world.

Personally, I believe in giving no platform to fascism and racism, regardless of the pseudo-intellectual or pseudo-spiritual masks it tries to hide behind.

as someone once said, if there were no fascists, what would we use for punchbags?
Oh, and co-opting 'anarchism' and 'libertarianism' by the far right is not new, the neo-cons and their ilk have been at it for years.

Whenever someone qualifies 'anarchism' with something so completely self-contradictory as 'state' or 'national', one must suspect that they are trying to subvert the terminology -- or at the very least, that they are trying to say nothing while still seeming 'radical'. Both are important warning signs, and even without the racist elements I would be quite wary of associating with him.

Just recalling how many (countless) times, I've delved into various esoteric fields (from prior to 1960 most often) and found endemic heterosexism, sexism, homophobia, racism, fascist or theocratic authoritarianism, odious hierarchical autocracy, social closures of all kind, etc. I still read with adaptive enthusiasm from an ethical remove. The over arching point here, from my perspective, is that a 'community' of the esoterically inclined should responsibly integrate socio-political consciousness and awareness of exoteric political consequences of esoteric doctrines, without setting about on PC witch hunts. Easier said than done and a fine line to walk. It is possible and even necessary for ongoing civil dialog to take place between widely divergent ideological positions. Fraud or pretense in these fields is nothing new either.

Here's to you for not only refusing to contribute, but for making your refusal public and vocal.

I got into an eddy of research on this topic recently after a friend recommended the blog Who Makes the Nazis?. There's some good points of departure there for sounding this murky current. A lot of criticism there points to figures whose heyday was back in the '80s, and some people have commented wondering if the whole fascist occulture overlap has had its day and is really worth bothering about. I'd say that in these days of ironic cultural glibness (masking dangerous tendencies) and severe economic instability (encouraging scapegoating and irrationality), the issue should hardly be considered dead or safely contained. Good to see some outspoken opposition!

I'm very impressed by the well-thought-out and principled stand that Peter Grey and Alkistis Dimech are taking here. Proud to be associated with Scarlet Imprint!

I am a professional musician. Thats my job, so to speak. I work primarily in the blues/jazz and Afro-Cuban musiacl formats. I am an artist that works in several other medium as well as music.

Its a more than a tad surreal to consider this as an issue, since it would appear to be abundantly clear even to the uninitiated that we are all differnt expressions of the one source. I suppose ignorance such as most recently mentioned re.Southgate is merely another chapter in the grand drama, but a tedious one nevertheless

The spiritual continuity of all people should also be equally clear. I cant get on a sopbox here, I am introducing myself more or less...

I am grate4ful to have lived long enough to see a group like Scarlet Imprint in existence.

Peace and blessings and Ashe
